New This Week

It has been a busy week of new additions to MD Consult; while new journals and news articles are added to the site regularly, new book editions are a bit special.

For Ferri’s Clinical Advisor, it’s something of a happy new year already – the 2012 edition is now available. It contains advice for diagnosing more than 700 conditions with the latest clinical information and it includes (among many other topics) updated information on dietary supplements – and possible interactions – that primary care physicians should be aware of.

There are a variety of new Clinics articles as well; the latest editions of Orthopedic Clinics of North America and Critical Care Clinics are now live. Perthes Disease and a variety of approaches to its treatment are the focus of the former. Of note in the latter, whose focus is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), is an article describing a safe – and inexpensive – procedure to help treat ARDS

Trending Health Topics – on Twitter and MD Consult

Did you know that every day the volume of tweets sent out by Twitter users is equivalent to a 10 million-page book?

I was struck recently by that stat when reading the Twitter blog. With 200 million tweets sent daily, the global Twitter community provides insights on what topics are on people’s minds across the globe.  Twitter Provides A Trove of Health Trends according to Eliza Barclay on Shots – NPR’s health blog.  Social scientists and computer scientists are developing ways to mine tweets for intelligence of all sorts.

According to Twitter the top trending topic for the first half of 2011 is AH1N1 – Swine Flu.  So the most popular topic is a health topic.  And that fact got me thinking about the power of MD Consult.   Physicians log over 1.7 million searches each month on MD Consult to find clinical answers.  That is a valuable source of intelligence on health topics that are on physicians’ minds across the globe.

To keep abreast of trending topics in the medical community, would you be interested in a monthly report from us on the top 5 physician searches on MD Consult?
